and with Thanksgiving Day soon approaching let's take time to feel gratitude to God for all the good things in life, acknowledge the good deeds of our family and friends and be thankful.

Life is very trying right now for many people. Some are facing economic challenges, many are physically ill, and some are facing family issues. So, for just a few minutes on Thanksgiving Day, step outside your situation and just "be". Find something, no matter how small, to be thankful for because in giving thanks you will be lightening your load, even if only for a moment. Don't believe me? Give it a try!

Thanksgiving thoughts are the kind of thoughts we should have all year long. Take time for kindness to those we hold most dear, extend a helping hand to others throughout the year, and set aside some time to share with family and friends.

Start a Thanksgiving Day Tradition
At your holiday gathering, give guests strips of colorful paper, have each person write a line of thanks and sign his or her name, and drop the strips into a clear glass bowl. Use the bowl as a centerpiece; then, after the feast, pass it around and ask each person to read one note out loud. You may discover that your teenager is grateful for you after all. your life

God bless,
Hollie

Align Your Actions With Your Values

Make generosity a part of every day. Use the following inspirations to better align your actions with your values, get more spiritually grounded and deepen your relationships with the people around you.

Think Outside Yourself - Many of us would give more than we do if we didn't feel so boxed in to certain roles. These self-images (mother, teacher, business executive) can limit our view of what we can contribute. True service isn't about what we have to offer by who we are; it's about being available, willing and open to whatever the need may be.

Be Happy For Someone Else - Share joy or true happiness for someone else's good fortune. Celebrate in a friend's news and you may find that good fortune and energy rubbing off on you.

Give What You Need - At first this doesn't make sense. If you need something, how can you possible have it to give away? Therein lies the whole point--the magic behind giving. Rather than viewing yourself in need of things from others, see yourself as the giver of those things and you may be surprised as to what happens. Think about what you'd like more of in your life. More friends? Make it a point to be there for someone in need. More laughter? Share a joke or funny story--and you'll be laughing too.

Use the News - when listening to the doom-and-gloom of the nightly news do you wonder, "What can I do -- and what difference would it make anyway?". But our response is a choice that's under our control. Start seeing the news differently. Watch with a different perspective, using the information as a guide to where help is most needed and then act on it.

Reach Beyond Your Circle - Chances are, you give most to the people closes to you. While this might be where giving starts, it shouldn't end there. We need to strike a balance between giving to those we know and those we don't. By widening your scope, you send a message that the rest of the world matters.

Pass the Torch - Showing generosity toward others goes beyond just being nice; it means empowering them with a sense of value. When you teach someone a new skill or technique, praise his/her contributions. Who in your world could benefit from your attention and time?

Give All Day, Everywhere - Try making a special effort to give attention and kindness to all the people you interact with, whether you know them or not. Notice how it changes your experience, your mood, and the way people respond to you.

TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Rescue, Raise & Rebuild - Watoto Ministry (Uganda, Africa)

This is long post I know, but please bear with me and read to the end...

Approximately 47.5 million orphans live in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1/4 whom have lost parents to Aids...2.5 million of those children live in Uganda.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE in the lives of those children in Uganda is the Watoto Ministry. This ministry is designed to not only help meet the needs of orphaned children and widows in Uganda, but transform their lives. The Watoto Model is the construction of children's villages, which provides a home-like environment where children are housed, clothed, fed, educated and spiritually discipled with the intention to train and equip them as future leaders. The goal is to provide holistic, residential care for every child so that each one will become a responsible Christian and a productive citizen of Uganda and Africa. Please visit http://www.watoto.com/ to learn more about this wonderful ministry. Click the Projects tab and The Watoto Model link for specifics re the villages.

I would also like to introduce you to Charity Gray. A dear friend of mine and a true sister in Christ. Charity traveled to the Watoto village last summer on a mission trip where the team completed a four-room schoolhouse for orphan children in 3-1/2 days. She knew before she left that she would some day return; she just wasn't sure in what capacity. The trip left a lasting impression. Charity firmly believes the Lord is calling her into missions with the African nation, and the Lord has provided what she believes is "the opportunity of a lifetime." She has been offered a position through Watoto Ministries as a personal assistant to the Facilities Management Department. She will travel from village to village, interacting with Watoto moms and children while doing discipleship work and leading each household to taking on the role of a home owner. Another key element will be dealing with social issues involving the moms and children, utilizing the experience she gained while working for Greene County Social Services (Springfield, MO).

I tell you all this to allow you an opportunity to be a part of this incredible journey of faith and MAKE A DIFFERENCE. If you would like to assist in this ministry, there are several ways you can become involved...PRAY...GIVE...FOLLOW.

PRAY...for the children of Uganda, the Watoto Ministry, and wisdom and discernment for Charity
GIVE...partner financially providing funds upfront in order for Charity to leave for Uganda or support during her 3 year commitment*
FOLLOW...visit Charity's blog www.myjourneywiththefather.blogspot.com.

Please prayerfully consider how the Lord may be leading you to assist in this life-changing endeavor.

*For accountability and tax purposes, financial gifts will go through Selmore Baptist Church (Charity's church home) and Selmore will then send you a tax letter.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27 NIV).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makeadifferencebyhollie.blogspot.com/2010/09/rescue-raise-rebuild-watoto-ministries.html' title='Rescue, Raise & You can also post items you have on hand (a used computer, musical instruments) on the donor-offer board.

My church, Selmore Baptist in Ozark, MO, is blessed with quite a few members who are teachers in the area public school systems. Set targets for what you want to achieve. Be ambitious. But make sure that your plan is achievable. Don't be afraid of failure. Do something and try your best to succeed.

Wishing you a Happy New Year...Together Let's Make A Difference in 2010.

Holiday Recycling

CHRISTMAS CARDS...give your holiday greeting cards a future life by donating them to St. Jude's Ranch for Children, an organization for abused, abondoned, and neglected children. Ask everyone to take out their wish list and mark one item off the list and instead apply the value of that gift as a donation to a charity of their choice. Adults and school-age children can research a variety of charities via the internet to help determine who to support. Or as a group pool the money together for a single family donation. If you have trouble deciding which charity to support, put the charity names in a hat and draw a name. Then on Christmas day, pick a time during the day to share with each other the organziation(s) the family supported and say a prayer for the recipients of your generosity.

Where to begin your search? Go to the Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half of its annual advertising revenues to charity. Go to http://www.goodsearch.com/. For every Web search you launch from its site, GoodSearch gives roughly a penny to the charity of your choice (pick from over 39,000 organizations). Tempted to think this is chump change? Heifer International would disagree. This world-hunger nonfprofit earned almost $400 in four months. In Heifer terms, that's three sheep, four goats, or 21 rabbits donated to communities in need. In GoodSearch terms, that's about 65 supppoters conducting five search.

To help you get started, search the following: United Way, Feed the Children, Heifer, World Vision, and Share Our Strength.

What a wonderful family tradition to start...Create a spirit of giving "to others" within your home.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERECE!

Urgent Action Request

The American Center for Law &

WRONG! "Words are weapons, sharper than knives..." They can cut to the heart, leaving gaping wounds.

Are words more powerful when they build up or when they destroy? This is a question in my Sunday School quarterly this week. We're studying the book of James (Chapter 3)...Taming the Tongue.

The Awesome Power of Words
What we say and don't say are both important. Saying the right words at the right time is good, but controlling our desire to say what we shouldn't is important too. An uncontrolled tongue can do terrible damage. Once our words are out there, we can't take them back. A few words spoken in anger can destroy a relationship that took years to build.

Dual Nature of Words
Our contradictory speech often puzzles us. At times our words are right and pleasing to God, but at other times they are violent and destructive.

The Wise Use of Words
When our speech is motivated by God and His wisdom it is full of mercy, love for others, peace, sincerity and impartiality.

When our speech is motivated by Satan it is full of bittter envy, selfish ambition, disorder, evil.

The tongue gives us a picture of our basic human nature...our true identity.

Thank a Teacher

In this season of thanksgiving, take time to Thank A Teacher. The call center operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Missouri callers can dial 211 from a landline or AT&T cell phone. Other cell phone users should dial 1-800-427-4626. A trained specialist will determine the area from which the person is calling, and what services are needed, and then provide contact information for all available services in the person's community.
Information and resources including a searchable database of services available can be found at: http://www.211missouri.org/.

Volunteers and donors also can use 211 to find out where their services or donations are most needed and appropriate.

If you know of someone needing assistance right now, why not refer them to 211.

NOTE: 211 is NOT an emergency hotline. Residents should continue to call local emergency numbers for medical emergencies, fires and police assistance.

Spread the word - Make A Difference Today!

I'd love to hear your feedback.

Recycling Old Cell Phones

Below are a few options for recycling cell phones:

Donate It: Whether or not your old phone works, consider donating it (and the charger) to the Wireless Foundation's Call to Protect program, which refurbishes phones for survivors of domestic violence. If you've upgraded to a new TV set, how do you properly dispose of the old set (television sets contain potentially harmful materials)?

For Springfield-area residents, The Computer Recycling Center, 1434 N. National Avenue, is a state-certified electronics waste recycler. A fee of $20 to cover transportation and disposal costs will apply. The center also accepts computers, VCR's, microwaves and other "e-waste".

For more information, visit: www.computerrecyclingcenter.org.

Americans toss about 2 million tons of "e-waste" each year, according to the EPA. What you are, expressed in words and actions, really counts. Your personal integrity and the way you live your life can be a beacon of light in a world where there is great disconnection between what people say and what they do. When you live in harmony with your deepest values, your life reflects it. There's no need to advertise--people see it without being told. Remember that the way you live your life is your message to the world!

Biblical Scripture to back this up: James 3:13

Cancel a Phone Book

Millions of phone books hit American doorsteps unsolicited every year at the expense of 19 million trees.
